PROPERTY HISTORY: This remarkable property has remained in the Timberlake family for nearly 200 years. It was originally owned by Lieutenant Colonel John Timberlake (1814–1864), a Civil War veteran and prominent figure in Harrison County history. During the summer of 1863, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and approximately 2,200 cavalrymen—known as Morgan’s Raiders—crossed the Ohio River at Brandenburg, Kentucky, on July 8, 1863, launching their historic raid into Indiana. Defying orders, Morgan seized two steamboats to transport his troops and horses across the river. After completing the crossing, the steamboat Alice Dean was burned to prevent its use by pursuing Union forces. At that time, John Timberlake owned several hundred acres in the area, including this property. The land overlooks the location where Morgan’s Raiders crossed the Ohio River and entered Indiana, a site that is now owned and preserved by the State of Indiana. On July 9, 1863, Lieutenant Colonel Timberlake led the Corydon Militia in defense against Morgan’s Raiders during the Battle of Corydon—the only Civil War battle fought on Indiana soil. This property stands as a rare and significant connection to one of the most notable events in Indiana history. NOTE: the first open house will be held 163 years to the day of the Morgan Raiders invasion of this property!
